Finally, the wait is over. Apple launched the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max at its big event on September 9, 2026, and official sales began today, September 18, 2026, across the world, including India. This time, Apple has completely changed its years-old strategy, and that's why this launch is different.
A Major Shift in Launch Strategy
Every year, Apple used to launch four iPhones simultaneously in September—the standard, Plus, Pro, and Pro Max. But that wasn't the case this time. This year, Apple launched only premium models—the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and Apple's first foldable iPhone, called the iPhone Fold.
The company has postponed the regular iPhone 18, iPhone 18e, and iPhone Air 2 until Spring 2027. This means that if you want the cheaper iPhone 18, you'll have to wait until March-April 2027. Apple did this to ensure that the Pro models get all the spotlight and the foldable phone's hype doesn't diminish. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman also previously reported that the event would take place on September 8th or 9th.
Design - Smaller Dynamic Island and New Colors
The iPhone 18 Pro looks similar to the iPhone 17 Pro at first glance, but if you look closely, you'll notice three major changes.
The first change is the Dynamic Island. Now it has become 35% smaller than before. Apple has shifted some of the sensors of Face ID below the display, which is being called Under-Display Face ID. The advantage of this is that more space will be saved on the screen and watching videos will be more fun. Apple has also given a new feature in it - now you can see 3 live activities simultaneously. Like Zomato order on one side, cricket score on the other side and Uber status on the third side.
The second change is the colour. This time Apple has removed last year's Titanium Orange colour. 3 new colours have come - Burgundy, Black and Glacier. Burgundy, a dark red-wine-like color, is this year's hero color. Glacier, a light blue-white color, feels very premium. The Ceramic Shield glass on the back and the aluminum frame on the sides now match the same color, making the phone look even more seamless.
Display - Brighter, More Power Efficient
The iPhone 18 Pro has a 6.3-inch display, and the Pro Max has a 6.9-inch display. Both have LTPO OLED panels that support ProMotion from 1Hz to 120Hz. Brightness has now been increased to 3000 nits, meaning the screen will be extremely clear even in bright sunlight. The new display is 20% more power efficient than before, resulting in longer battery life.
Performance - World's First 2nm Chip A20 Pro
This is the biggest upgrade to this iPhone. The iPhone 18 Pro features Apple's new A20 Pro chip. It is the world's first chip built on the 2nm process, manufactured by TSMC. It has a 6-core CPU, 7-core GPU, and a 32-core Neural Engine.
Apple says this chip delivers 20% faster CPU performance and 40% faster GPU performance than the A19 Pro. This will be a huge advantage for gaming. Heavy games like BGMI and COD won't see FPS drops, and the phone will feel less hot. Sustained performance is also 40% better.
Apple has also integrated its own C2 modem with this chip. This modem provides faster 5G than the previous Qualcomm modem and also has mmWave 5G and 5G Satellite Connectivity. This means that if you're in a forest or mountain where there's no network, you can send an emergency SOS via satellite. There's also a new N2 chip that supports WiFi 7 and Bluetooth 6.
Camera - Now iPhone Becomes a DSLR
The camera has always been the iPhone's strongest point, and this time, Apple has made it truly DSLR-like.
The main camera is a 48-megapixel Fusion camera, but this time it features variable aperture. Until now, this feature was only available in expensive DSLR cameras. Now, you can manually change the aperture between f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8, and f/4.0. At f/1.48, more light will enter while taking photos at night, making the photos brighter. At f/4.0, if you are taking a group photo, even the people in the background will appear sharp. This is a great feature for photographers.
Pro Controls have also been added to the Camera app. You can manually set the shutter speed, white balance, and aperture. A new histogram option has also been added, which will help professional photographers check exposure.
Video has also been upgraded. You can now record 4K Time-Lapse video in Dolby Vision HDR. ProRes video is now recorded in 4K 120fps. The front camera has also been upgraded to 24 megapixels, making low-light selfies and video calls clearer.
Battery and Charging
Battery life is the best this time around. The iPhone 18 Pro Max has the largest battery to date. According to Apple, the Pro Max will provide up to 33 hours of video playback, and the Pro up to 29 hours. Charging speeds have also increased – 40W wired charging and 25W MagSafe wireless charging. Reverse wireless charging also allows you to charge AirPods faster.
Price and What Should You Buy?
The iPhone 18 Pro price in India starts at ₹134,900 for the 128GB model. The 256GB model costs ₹149,900. The Pro Max starts at ₹159,900.
If you have an iPhone 14 or 15, this phone is a significant upgrade. However, if you have an iPhone 17 Pro, spending so much money just for the chip and camera isn't wise. If you're on a tight budget, you should wait until March 2027 for the regular iPhone 18. It will also feature an A20 chip but won't have a variable aperture camera.
Overall, the iPhone 18 Pro is a solid upgrade, especially for those who prioritize photography and performance.
